Having a solid foundation of vocabulary is essential when it comes to learning any language, it is a fundamental tool to develop our communicative abilities. The more vocabulary you know, the more chance you will have of achieving a good mark, it will also help you in the four skill areas the exam is divided into:
For that reason, we have worked hard in this area, to offer you a wide range of vocabulary, for the GCSE Spanish, organized by the topics the syllabus is made up of – check our Spanish vocabulary list. In addition, we have also created activities and games (click on the link to see an example: months of the year in Spanish), that will help you to memorize the vocabulary as if it was a game you will learn correct pronunciation and use it in the right context.

Tips for learning vocabulary
- When learning new vocabulary, it is important for you to identify whether the word is a verb, a noun, an adjective, or an adverb…, because everyone works in a different way.
- Remember, you have to learn the gender of nouns in Spanish. In other words, you must know whether each word is feminine or masculine. For instance, can you guess the gender of the words in the game below?
- Adjectives (bueno, malo, caro…) and articles (el, la, los, las), for example, have to match the gender of the noun so, if you don’t master this issue, you may make mistakes that will reduce your mark, especially when it comes to speaking or writing.
- Bear in mind that you will not need to memorize all the new words, many of them are similar in both languages and easy to identify. These words are called cognates (learn more about Spanish-English cognates).
- On the other hand, you need to be careful with false friends, words that look similar but have different meanings (learn more about Spanish-English false friends).
- People memorize words in different ways, you have to find what is the most effective for you. In the video below you can see some ideas that can help you.
